QotD: What My Name Means

What does your name mean and why did your parents choose it for you?

I'm not wholly sure this is true, but I think my parents hadn't come up with a name for me when I was born and my mom was so doped up she told dad to just name me something and let her sleep.

This is the true part: I was named after Spiderman's girlfriend [not that hooer MJ] before she died and was repurposed as...I don't even know what, I'm a Superman girl and don't read Spiderman, but I've heard awful things. Apparently she appeared in the latest movie this summer; EW referred to her as a "tart." And she had a kid with Green Goblin or something. I don't know. I don't want to know. I'd like to continue thinking of her as Spiderman's first true love. I believe my father had a crush on her and so that is the name he chose for me.

And that is why I'm a Gwen, just Gwen, not Gwendolyn or Guinevere or any of that nonsense.

Okay, we hate to ask, but... over the roll or under the roll?

Function: Under is ew because all who have gone before have touched roll; also, roll continuously rubs against wall, which, even if you're anal retentive, is never 100% sterile. Form-wise, over is unconstrained, therefore more beautiful.

I never would've guessed that she'd want a typewriter [or even had more than a peripheral awareness of them] but she gushed over one she spotted while out shopping with Chad a few weeks ago, so I went back to pick one up. They had several of them at the antiques emporium, many with the older glass keys that I find more aesthetically interesting, but this one was in excellent condition, had a working ribbon, an intact manual, and the keys didn't stick, and while to me this looks like school-industrial offal [because it's very similar to the ones we had in typing class in high school], she didn't have the same experience and I'm sure to her it's filled with fabulous vintage character. She made the camera face when she opened it, told us that she'd vowed several years ago to save up to buy herself one.

I already showed her the "L" for the "1" and where the apostrophe and quote marks are and how to use the carriage return, but it's been awhile and I am sure there are other nifty typewriter tricks I'm missing -- if you remember any [if you're old enough to have used one], let us know.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Why?

I'm going to stay right here in Alameda

all the blues.

with the following changes:

1. DESTROY THE EARTHQUAKES SMASH SMASH
2. Disperse half the population to the reddest corners of the country to make the congestion more bearable here and the politics moreso there.
3. I was going to say raising the summer average temperature by about 5° but global warming seems to be taking care of that.

Or I'll take one of those deep-South Pacific wonderlands.

Did you dress up today? See any good costumes?

I'm still figuring mine out -- as usual, everyone else comes first. I just finished sewing a Pocahontas dress for D'arby [yes, the Disney one, I know, I know] and converted some ugly polyester pants and a tiny women's early-90s jacket into some mariachi magic for Chad -- I think I did a good job, though it helps him being so darn fine.
