The summer between 5th and 6th grades, I spent several weeks in Seattle with some family friends. One morning we didn't have a chance to eat before we left for the Attraction of the Day, and had to make do with booth-fare when we arrived, which was the point when Patricia told me that it's okay to have Coke and chocolate cake for breakfast once in awhile, which is one of the best things anyone's ever said to me and can be applied to just about any situation.

When I was maybe 9 or 10, my maternal grandmother sent me an opal charm on a gold chain that arrived on or just before Halloween, though I seem to remember it being a gift in honor of some saint she somehow related to me even though I don't have a proper Christian name, and it fell off my neck while I was roaming the neighborhood gathering candy. I looked all over for it for weeks, and, close to 30 years later, I still experiences moments of regret over losing it.
