Okay, we hate to ask, but... over the roll or under the roll?
Function: Under is ew because all who have gone before have touched roll; also, roll continuously rubs against wall, which, even if you're anal retentive, is never 100% sterile. Form-wise, over is unconstrained, therefore more beautiful.

I wrote this long, long thing about how much and specifically 2006 sucked for me [not to mention 90% of you, it has been one disaster after another out there], and I kept thinking I was done but then I'd remember one more fucking trauma and it was just pissing me off all over again, so fuck that. I put that file away and buried it deep in my hard drive and am never going to look at it again, and I'm doing my best to forget all of that, because there is nothing to learn except that life's fucking hard sometimes and you just have to do your best to wait it out because it will get better.
Forget you, 2006, you are every bad boyfriend and backstabbing bitch I've ever known rolled into one, and I've been around almost 40 years, so that's saying a lot.
Go fuck yourself, 2006, I'm through with you and your wicked nonsense. I'm so over you that there's just this little dead spot in my heart that I don't even notice anymore. You can fall off the planet and drop dead for all the difference it will make to me.
Sweet 2007, my arms are wide open, my mind is all light, I am determined that there is to be no more mayhem and heartache and upheaval, no sickness and sadness and craziness. 2007, you are all about goodness and light and learning and love and fresh fresh freshness. Everything is on you, do not fuck this up because I can't take the disappointment anymore.
1. NYE was awesome. I got a little tipsy on white russians, then swigged cheap champagne out of a bottle while kissing Chad and watching the fireworks with some excellent friends, then we played board games into the wee hours. The girls ran up and down the street hooting and hollering at 4am, and I half-heartedly told them to quiet down but I didn't really mean it. Being 16 and yelling your head off in the dead quiet is one of the best things in the world.
2. NYD was also awesome, though I woke up after only two hours' unmoving sleep and was sore and discombobulated all day. Late breakfast at Ole's, where I was reminded how truly excellent their pancakes are, and a long sunset walk at the beach, the tide was full-moon out and the whole sea wall on the little bay was exposed so we walked all the way to the end.
3. Jan. 2 I forgot to call my mom though I gave her her birthday card the other day; separated the overgrown African iris in front of the porch and planted bits along the sidewalk. Chad helped and we both feel very accomplished. It's going to look awesome when it fills out and blooms.
4. Jan. 3 is today, if Chad will get his butt out of the ready room, I am going to take him on a date to free day at the aquarium in the Big City. I haven't seen caged fish in far too long.
I am going to keep trying to do what I've been trying to do, which is mostly about my temple of a body, because if there's one thing 2006 was about, it's how frail we are at our very core. More water, more breakfast, less smoking, more bicycling, more smiling, more hand holding, more stopping to really see what's around me. I am going to do as much good as I can for myself, my family, my friends, and my neighbors. It's not a resolution, I just want to stop wasting my life on the things that don't really matter. I want to be truly, madly, deeply happy, and if nothing else is going to let me, I'm just going to have to do it myself. I just have to keep in mind that it's all me.
What's the best present you gave this year?
I already showed her the "L" for the "1" and where the apostrophe and quote marks are and how to use the carriage return, but it's been awhile and I am sure there are other nifty typewriter tricks I'm missing -- if you remember any [if you're old enough to have used one], let us know.
Remember awhile back I asked you to vote for my photos for inclusion in JPG Magazine? Thank you, one of them was accepted and is in issue 7, which is out now and their first wide-distribution issue so available at chains and the like. If you like pretty pictures and are interested in subscribing, they sent contributors a special discount code to share, it's just $15 for an annual subscription [6 issues] instead of $25. Good deal there.
My conundrum: I just received my $100 check for the shot [I know, life's hard] and am trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm tempted to frame it as being paid for taking a picture totally blows my mind, but obviously, it's photography fun money from me to me! and should be spent accordingly instead of being thrown into the usual bill-daughter-bill-daughter abyss. Any suggestions? [My birthday is Saturday, so I might pass it on to Chad to add to the present kitty, so it's not strictly limited to $100, but don't go nuts.]
And if you need something else to do: I submitted some photos for the next edition, and if you like them, I'd appreciate a positive vote for them. Or you can click around and see some other bang-up shots and vote for them instead. Or you can vote no on every single photo on there, art's subjective like that. These are mine:

I'm going to stay right here in Alameda
1. DESTROY THE EARTHQUAKES SMASH SMASH
2. Disperse half the population to the reddest corners of the country to make the congestion more bearable here and the politics moreso there.
3. I was going to say raising the summer average temperature by about 5° but global warming seems to be taking care of that.
Or I'll take one of those deep-South Pacific wonderlands.
